Speak with Structure

Clear talking isn't a talent — it's a shape. Open cleanly, carry one real point, close with the ask. Here are the shapes worth knowing, plus a rebuilder for when your thought comes out tangled.

Rebuild a messy thought

Say it however it comes out — tangled, hedgy, too long. Get back a clear, confident version with the shape labeled.

The frameworks

PREP

Any opinion, update, or answer on the spot.

  1. 1Point Say your conclusion first.
  2. 2Reason One reason it's true.
  3. 3Example A concrete instance.
  4. 4Point Restate it to land it.

We should push the launch a week. (Point) The onboarding flow still fails on mobile. (Reason) Yesterday two testers got stuck at sign-up. (Example) So — one more week and we ship it right. (Point)

Outcome → Support → Ask

Asking for something: a decision, a resource, a yes.

  1. 1Outcome The result you want, up front.
  2. 2Support The reason it's worth it.
  3. 3Ask The specific, clear request.

I want us to hit the deadline without burning out the team. (Outcome) We're two people short for the scope. (Support) Can we either add one contractor or cut the reporting feature? (Ask)

STAR

Interviews — telling a story about your impact.

  1. 1Situation Set the scene briefly.
  2. 2Task What you were responsible for.
  3. 3Action What YOU specifically did.
  4. 4Result The measurable outcome.

Our churn spiked 15%. (Situation) I owned finding out why. (Task) I ran exit interviews and rebuilt onboarding. (Action) Churn dropped back to 4% in two months. (Result)

Acknowledge → State → Redirect

Conflict, pushback, or holding a boundary.

  1. 1Acknowledge Show you heard them.
  2. 2State Your position, plainly.
  3. 3Redirect Point to the way forward.

I get that this is frustrating and you needed it sooner. (Acknowledge) I'm not able to redo it by tonight. (State) I can have it right by tomorrow noon — does that work? (Redirect)
